A (wet) journey to Shostakovich

I have to admit that in my youth I was a frequent opera-goer but lately I’ve been delinquent in favor of Musical Theatre. But since Musical Theatre, art and opera seemed to have crossed paths in The Nose, currently at the Metropolitan Opera, I braved yesterdays unnamed but semi-hurricane to go in and have a look.

As a piece of performance art this production has done itself proud. The music of Shostakovich is not that which supports beautifully sung extended arias and the chorus spends much of its time barking or singing in contra temps to each other. That’s not so much a criticism as it is a statement of fact. Handling this musical chaos was the task of the artist, set designer, director William Kentridge. It was just the sort of challenge that this man was up to. The artwork in itself (I was particularly taken by the horse) and it’s’ presentation as projections took the sometimes overly long opera to a different level of discovery. Additionally, his directional choices pointed the listener to more alternative interpretations of the text which made my experience sometimes more one of contemplation rather than of the senses.

Valery Gergiev was the conductor. He is the musical master of this opera in the modern time and it was evident that the score, sometimes all over the place, was well within his control at all times. Whether it is a Shostakovich problem or a directorial/conductor choice I’m not sure, but if the baritone was meant to be heard in the Cathedral scene it was obvious that even a baritone with great projection was not going to be audible above the wall of sound coming from both the chorus and the orchestra.

Which brings us to Paulo Szot. Making his Met debut hard upon his Tony award at the theatre next door must be a heady sensation for him. But just the fact that he had won a tony (remember it’s for Best ACTOR in a musical not necessarily for best singer) made him the perfect choice for this role. Szot has a mellow baritone with some lovely lower range notes and an effortless upper range. They do not show to his advantage in this opera but his acting ability does. His willingness to open himself to pathos, self-importance and just plain silliness (the tricycle was just the right touch) is something that a lot of baritones just would not have been able to pull off. With my taste whetted I can’t wait to see to what level he can take a more traditional role. I don’t think “stand and deliver” will be his forte.

Well, I have to go and dry out my water wings.

Sorry to announce tonight that The Old River House is closing. Actually I am only sorry so long as there is no restaurant in that beautiful spot. I will miss their food but not the wait service. It's funny to note that the best restaurant service in town is only a half a block away at Dora. The best of NYC style wait service is available there.

The Birth of a Broadway Babe

It was to be my second and last viewing of the play A Steady Rain. I hadn’t intended on doing it again but something drove me there. Perhaps it was the fifth row ticket that answered my knock on the door of the Telecharge website.

I settled into my seat noting that the Schoenfeld does provide some knee room where their more expensive tickets play, when a mountain of a man stepped over me and sat down next to me, crossing his arms in one simple gesture of “I don’t want to be here.” Great, always good to have an amiable seat-mate.

I decided to ignore him but there was no doing that. Turning only his head and not his body he asked in a broad NewYawk accent, “How long is this thing?”

Okay, right there he had my back up. I’d just paid $150 to watch a “thing?” I think not.

“An hour and 30 minutes but there’s a fund-raiser for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS after so it will probably be about one forty five before you can sprint out of the theatre.”

I wondered at someone so bent on not being a place the entry to which he had paid $150.

I thought that would be the end of the conversation, but no.

“They’re raising money for AIDS?”

I got ready to defend it but before I could open my mouth he said:

“That’s good.”

But he was still looking straight ahead at the stage as if studying a perp.

“My wife thought I should come. She bought me the ticket. I always do what she says.”

Suddenly it dawned on me.

“Are you NYPD?”

He turned slowly in my direction.

“Brooklyn, yeah. My badge showing?”

“Nope, just a good guess.”

“You a profiler?”

“No, just a New Yorker.”

“Humpf.”

“She said it’s a play about cops. She went because she likes one of the guys in the play. I never been to a play before. Not even in High School.”

I wondered for a beat about someone living in NY who had a wife who liked plays but had never been himself. But I only wondered for a beat because Mr. Only-looks-at-the-stage was off on another run-on paragraph.

“She thinks I’ll like it. Will I?”

I decided to go for minimalist.

“Do you like Law and Order?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s Law and Order without the car chase and set in Chicago.”

He relaxed a bit.

The ushers began with their song and dance.

“The magic (where did they get that phrase) will begin shortly. Please turn off your cell phones. No photography is allowed anywhere in the theatre…”

“What magic?” He mumbled to the curtain.

I decided it best not to answer.

The lights went down. The music hummed in the background. The curtain went up.

By now, for me, the best show was in the audience.

I arranged myself so that I could see him on the edge of my peripheral vision. His arms were still crossed but he chuckled a bit when Hugh Jackman made his opening remarks about being a Nielson family.

Five minutes into the play and I turned again slightly to my left. His arms were uncrossed, he was leaning slightly forward.

Then they described the bullet through the front window. He leaned farther forward and relaxed, his hands clasped between his knees. He stayed like this for the rest of the hour and a half. I think he had started becoming one with the play. When the audience was startled, as it is, by two of the revelations, he heard them as a cop would. He didn’t gasp or catch his breath like the audience; there was just a barely audible “shit” under his breath.

He came up for air only when he was carried there by the thunderous applause of the audience at the end of the play. Immediately he was on his feet taking cue, perhaps from the people in front of us, but his emotion was genuine and his applause louder almost than the rest of the thousand or so people in the theatre.

We settled back into our seats for the fund-raiser. Now he was a bit more relaxed and amiable.

“So deese guys. I seen ‘em somewhere before.”

I went Mona Lisa on him.

Hugh Jackman began to speak.

“Where the hell, pardon, did that come from?”

He seemed flummoxed by Hugh’s transition from Chicago cop to Australian actor.

“Australia,” I answered somewhat facetiously.

Then Daniel Craig began to speak in the Queen’s English.

The light dawned.

“James Bond.”

He smiled at his triumph of recognition.

“I’d a never known.”

He shook his head.

“But where do I know the other one from?”

“Wolverine.”

I took his few words for my cue.

“Nah.”

“Yeah.”

I pointed at his Playbill and he studied it.

“He sings?”

“Very well I might add.”

Jackman and Craig slipped off their shirts to reveal the wifebeaters that they were about to auction for BC/EFA and I thought I heard my companion mutter,

“I need to go to the gym more.”

But I may have been mistaken.

Then Hugh announced that Sunday night’s performance would benefit in part the NYCPBA Widows & Children’s Fund.

We were rising from our seats when he asked, “How would one go about getting tickets for Sunday night?”

He was hooked.

“I think the wife would like to see it again.”

I suppressed a snork and pointed him in the direction of the box office. I, being the older than middle-aged woman I am, headed for the ladies. But I was to have one last encounter with my Brooklyn cop.

As I came out of the alley and around the corner to the front of the theatre he was just coming out, tickets in hand.

“I showed him my credit card and my badge and got good seats for us on Sunday.”

He waved the tickets at me and beamed.

I think I saw the making of a theatre convert, Brooklyn style.

The Towne Restaurant in Clinton is the place where everybody knows your name. Literally. Short review: Comfort food and fun staff.

Food is standard Greek Diner fare, I generally opt for an omelette which comes with a huge mound of home fries and toast. The food is quite adequate. The service is well done with a tinge of sarcasm. Most of the wait staff are willing to talk to anyone and will do so at the drop of a hat. It isn't unusual to find Rosie sitting across from you instead of above you with pad in hand. You can ask Ashley about the latest record she's cut or where her next gig is. In turn they know your preferences and your can't stands. There is a can of diet coke on my table almost before I'm seated. I could do with a bit less of the touchy feely from Nic but it comes with the territory.

Occasionally I have been suprised by a truely delish wrap (turkey, bacon and cheese to be exact) accompanied by a fresh, really fresh Greek salad. But this is the place for mashed potatoes and fun conversation.

Lets see how many restaurant reviews I can write before I get bored (or full).

Today's review is of the Old River House in Clinton NJ. The short review is: Go here if you want good food and don't care about the service.

Last nights fiasco was about the third time this year I've been there and the third time the same thing happened to me.

It took three huddling waitresses 7 minutes (I timed it) to notice that I needed to be seated but since they weren't the hostess they ignored me. Three minutes after that (and a line piling up behind me) the hostess made it inside to seat me. Then it took 5 minutes for any of the wait staff to claim me and throw me a menu and asked what I wanted to drink. My salad came before my drink. A total of 25 minutes from entry to first drink.

The crab cakes, steamed vegies and salad were all excellent.

Then I needed a box and a check. Again, a gaggle of wait staff behind ignored my flailing for attention and I was only able to get waited on by (almost) tripping up one of then when she randomly wandered past. I hate to draw conclusions but as a single woman at a table I had the feeling that they thought the tip for one person wasn't going to be worth waiting on her.

The experience of the good food was completely obliterated by the awful service.

I'm sure I'm going to be flamed for this but...

Several of my friends have voted on Facebook on the Michael Vick poll and they have all voted against him returning. Why, most of the reasoning goes, should they let a man who has been convicted of torturing animals be allowed to go back to his job making mega bucks and being a role model for kids? Well, I'm sorry, but I can't vote against him in this poll. I believe everyone deserves a chance. I've been forgiven and given a few chances in my lifetime. If he is truely repentent, if he continues to work with the Humane society I believe that allowing him to return sends an even better message, one of forgiveness and hope to those who (as we all do) stray from the path. I'm afraid that I can't cast the first vote or stone here.

He's been given a year to prove himself. Lets send the message that you can be whole again.

Banks...sheesh

This is a semi-rant about TD bank, in the US former Commerce Bank. For a few years I have had checking and savings and an equity loan with what was Commerce Bank and now has been taken over by TD Bank of Canada. I have been totally satisfied with Commerce Banks performance but not so with TD bank. They seem to have fewer tellers now and not as courteous service.

Yesterday I get a letter in the mail from my Seminary which is in the process of undergoing major renovations and physical plant transformations. I will quote from that letter signed by the Dean:

One week after sending our July 6 Open Letter, our Executive Vice-President Marureen Burnley and I met with representatives of Commerce Bank to Discuss terms for conversion of the Tutu Center construction loan into a term loan, a common practice that had been planned. Instead, Commerce Bank, which had been bought by Toronto Dominion Bank, informaed us that they would not convert the loan and that in October we must either pay it in full or be found in default on this and the other loans held by them-a total of $22 million. There was no advance warning of their decision.

The Seminary was eventually able to place the refinance with M&T bank but I am really teed at my bank. Obviously the Seminary was financially healthy or they would not have been able to eventually place the loan but I'm interested in finding out why TD Bank was so difficult about the refinance. I have no first hand knowledge about TD Bank's financial or loan operations but I'm getting a bit disgruntled. While moving my accounts elsewhere may be a flea on an elephant, I'm sorely tempted.

Surf's Up!

Every four years or so several of us veterans of the OZ wars get together and make the trek from Doylestown, to Clinton, to Murray Hill to NYC for one or another of our obsessions. This year the obsession was Paulo Szot and the concert was Marvin Hamlisch's Philharmonic Benefit.

Paulo sang Some Enchanted Evening and then a duet with a simply marvelous and full voiced (as well as full bellied) Kelli O'Hara in If I Loved You. Kelli's voice just gets stronger and stronger and Paulo's upper range was wonderful for a baritone. Also Liza Minelli (characature of herself), Jennifer Holiday (ditto), Joel Grey (wonderful Wilcomen), Maria Friedman, Ashley Brown and a junior, a fantastic 15 year old named Nikki Yanofsky (think Ella Fitzgerald, 15 and white.)

The highlights for me? Standing in the gallery of Avery Fisher Hall and just looking out over the city lights. Listening to Glenn Dicterow play "Manhattan" on the violin accompanied by Marvin Hamlisch on the piano and the orchestra playing the music of Jerome Kern.

The downers? Great evening if you are a duck. I don't think I've been that wet in years.

The fun: Loved Carol's comment everytime we wound up in the wash on the turnpike. Surf's UP! Oh and the bathroom takeover. There was this long line at the ladies room on the second tier at the end of the show. A man suggested to us that the men's room at the end of the gallery had no one in it and that's all 6 of us needed to go down there. Just as we were about finished a man tried to get in and we blocked his entrance with our bodies. He wasn't happy. Tough.

I think I've been watching too much Life On Mars.

Got up at 10:30 this morning and headed at 11:30 for breakfast at Nick's. The clock in town said 10:30. I found a parking space right away (that's NOT 11:30AM in Clinton) and there were three people in Nick's. But it WAS 11:30. Hmmm. Then, later in the day when I went to McDonalds the parking spaces were no longer slanted, they were straight in to the curb...only they hadn't been repainted. Yup. Too much Life on Mars.

This afternoon was spent at a baby shower. All women. The men went to lunch. I thought when my friends started going over the 50 hump that that would be the end of the showers, but now it's their children. This one was nice though. When Elizabeth's mother suggested a game, Elizabeth gave her "the LOOK" and we went straight on to opening presents. We all know enough to not mess with hormonal pregnant ladies.

Oops I did it again.
I'm beginning to sound like Britney Spears. Due to a set of really wierd circumstances I found myself at South Pacific instead of 33 Variations yesterday. My problems with the performance from last time have all been resloved, it appears but, I guess I can't say thay until the performers are finished tomorrow night.

By way of explanation: Paulo Szot was back but is leaving now to perform in an opera in Europe. At least he was in. Better than that, however, he was magnificent. Every time I see this show I wonder how he can get any better, and yet he does. The other day someone said about his performance that he seems to be able to fit an entire Greek tragedy into "This Nearly Was Mine." Yesterday didn't disappoint. He was incredible. He has changed his performance over the run of the show but never gone backwards. Each change has brough more nuance and more beauty to the role.

Garrett Long, currently playing Ensign Sue Yaeger in South Pacific and understudying Nellie, was bridging the gap between the final performance of Kelli O'Hara who was going out on maternity leave and Laura Osnas who is coming into the role this week. Let me make a suggestion to the producers: If there is a problem with Laura Osnas put Garrett Long in permanently. She was grand. Her performance was not a parrot of Kelli's though it contained all the necessary interpretation elements that have probably been set by the director. But she added a few things that Kelli's performance lacked. She was a bit more "hick" than Kelli's "country club" Nellie, less polished a person and more of a country girl. Then there is the one pet peeve I have with Kelli's performance, sometimes her facial expression is frozen and you can't tell her smile from her grimace. Not so with with Garrett. Her smile was genuine and her heartbreak was discernable.

A lovely afternoon to make up for the disaster of a few weeks ago.

Bird World hierarchy

As I walked across the Halsted Street bridge I wondered why those honking, flying cows weren't landing. Its migration time for the Canada Geese (also known as BIG flying rats as opposed to pidgeons who are small flying rats). They circled the mill pond and made their tinny honking noises, obviously pissed that for some reason they couldn't land. Then, to my delighted ears came the sound of a true honk. The kind that comes from deep in the web feet of those beautiful white goose deterents. A lovely pair of swans were floating serenly on the pond and, while they shared it amiably with the resident mallards they were having nothing of the interlopers. May they stay on the pond for awhile.

Other than that Mrs Lincoln...

Okay, I admit to doing something once too often, and look what I get.

Started off this morning on a cold but beautiful day to see South Pacific just once more before everyone scattered. The bus was on time and relatively empty (meaning I got a seat to myself by just sitting there and looking mean). Spun my wheels for a while in lower Manhattan looking for a store I just could not find. Next time, get directions including cross streets. That involved getting on and off the bus several times so I had to keep my metro card handy. Note to self, don’t put it in an outside pocket of your purse, it just might decide to elope.

Took the bus all the way up to Lincoln Center. By this time it was noon and I needed lunch. I’d never been to O’Neal’s before and the bill of fare looked good so I walked in. I’m sorry, I didn’t know you don’t seat singles. You needn’t have been so rude.

Went over to EuroPan and got a wrap but the place was so busy I had to eat outside. I froze my fingers off. Hmmm.

Skip the show comments for the time being. When I came out I couldn’t find my metro card…it and 8 dollars of my funds had eloped and, after a short interlude with a quiche in Le Pain Quotidian, I took a cab to port authority. Another 8 dollars down the drain. At least the bus left on time. But it was two thirds empty and is usually full of standees. The economy is that depressed?

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln…

Well, South Pacific wasn’t very good and that is the reason for the "once too many" remark. Everyone was out. Well, not Kelli or Danny or Loretta, but Paulo, one of my reasons for going, was out and there were a spate of white slips in the Playbill. The Brazilian couple next to me were extremely disappointed and I don’t blame them. They’d just spent $260 to see their celebrated countryman and he wasn’t in. William Michals was in for Szot and I have to say, Michals’ fans aside, there is a reason he is the understudy. While his lower register is probably better than Szot’s he has a real problem in his upper register. While he has the role down, he is no Szot. He smiles to much and is WAY too smooth. He left me feeling as if Emile had become slightly smarmy.

Kelli, as I said was in. She probably should be out. I know she’s leaving shortly for maternity leave but she probably should have left a month ago. She is very obviously pregnant and the Brazilian woman sitting next to me noticed immediately. A pregnant Nelly doesn’t quite cut it. Besides, she seems to no longer be able to support her breath and has taken to belting.

Andrew Samonski was flat. Just plain flat. And snide. He always seems to be enjoying some joke that the audience isn’t. Brrrrr.

Now I have a theory for most of this (besides the sup-par acting), there’s a bug going around and they’re all in some stage of sickness. That would account for absences and sub-par singing (except Kelli who gets cut a little slack). Perhaps someone needs to go in and shape things up a bit. Just a thought.

It's taken me two days to come down from the Paulo Szot concert I attended at Lincoln Center's Allen Room on Saturday night. Even being able to process it afterward with my friend Carol didn't help me get to sleep and I lie in my (perfectly beautiful) hotel room at Chelsea Square till 3:40 AM humming Bossa Nova. Bossa Nova? All the reviews I've seen so far of Szot's concert fault the inclusion at the beginning of so much Jobim. I wasn't a fan of Bossa Nova. Until Saturday night. That's the effect of this man's choices on me.

To begin with Szot seemed totally different from the man I saw, er several times, in South Pacific. Which probably proves that he really did deserve that acting Tony. He was lLoose as a goose. He began by saying he was interjecting some South American Songbook (as opposed to the concert series' title "American Songbook."). That doesn't bother me as long as somewhere you get around to the night's theme.

So he began with "Brazil" followed with several Antonio Carlos Jobims in a head voice that didn't resemble the opera voice and by the third one he did he was doing the samba and shaking his .... like you wouldn't believe (of course he used to be a ballet dancer). Some of the critics mentioned that these songs didn't showcase his beautiful operatic baritone. My thought is that he was more than creditable in his head voice and could make a career out of that alone.

Then he sang two Argentine tangos in a voice closer to his opera voice. Followed by a modern Polish song, Grzegorz Turnau and Ewa Lipska's "Krotka bajka." and his own arrangement of a Jacques Brel," La chanson des vieux amants," played on the piano by him and sung by him in French.

Then to the bigger voiced stuff. "Besame Mucho"," Somewhere", a cute medley of songs he doesn't sing in South Pacific interlaced with "How High the Moon" and some very creditable scat singing. He complete wiped Robert Goulet from my mind when he sung "If Ever I Would Leave You" and of course, the audience favorite " This Nearly Was Mine."

In the middle somewhere he sung a ditty from Nine, Maury Yeston's "Only with You," which is sung to three different women about how he is in love only with each of them. He got down from the stage and sung it at three different tables. As we were applauding at the end, clueless husband behind me said to world-wise wifey..

"Two of those women really blushed when he sung it to them but the third didn't seem to be effected."

Wifey's answer..."He was singing to the guy next to her."

Husband. "Oh."

The evening was one of the best I've been to in my 50 some years of concert-going. I look forwad to many more from him and lets hope that the guy in front of me at the mixing board was successful at getting enough material for a CD. Of course, he couldn't digitally captures the moves during that samba....

As Good As it Gets
This noontime I discovered I'm on Amazon.com. No not that stupid listing in the clergy directory, my book, In Between Goodbyes finds itself HERE. Oh and it is IN Between Goodbyes. Between Goodbyes is an entirely different book. I'm so happy. Run out and buy it you guys. Oh and review it too, please. Sigh.

Then I got two mysterious calls on my phone but it didn't ring. I was in total despair as they were from NYC and I was awaiting word that my waiting time was up and I had a ticket to the Paulo Szot concert on Saturday night. Unfortunately the numbers were of the type that one could not call back. Sob.

I came home and went to bed. While elated about the Amazon. com thingie I wanted those tickets and now I had missed them.

Not to worry. A third call (and yes it was the same number) came around 5PM telling me I indeed I had a ticket for Saturday and indeed my weekend in NYC will be complete. Speed the Plow in the afternoon, Paulo Szot in the evening and then a hotel room on Chelsea Square. A perfect winter vacation. Sigh, again.

Service, with a smile

I found something interesting today. Service, with a smile. For various reasons, mostly my own, I had decided to return the cell phone that I had just received in the mail. According to the return instructions, I had to call Verizon and go through various exercises just to get my old one back. (I have to say here that the instructions on the internet WERE written in plain english.) I decided to go to the Verizon Wireless store in Clinton just to look at phones so I would know with what model phone to replace the one I was returning.

The greeter listened to my story.

He took me to the Assistant manager.

Who told me to go home and get my phone and he would straighten it out.

He did. Quickly. With no fuss. And with a smile.

Thank you Verizon Wireless
